Scrambled Chickens

posted Sunday, 26 February 2006
Three roosters is too many - at least for 20 hens.  The favored hens have bare backs from too much rooster attention, and that is bad considering how cold it is.  And I'm not ready to winnow down the roosters because we are still up in the air about who, when and whether to breed this year.  So early this morning, before the snow flurries started, we moved 8 beat up hens over to the new coop, where Qualia reigns.  He is the only rooster over there and there will be less wear and tear on the biddies.  And we took the same number of his hens - the ones who really aren't laying anymore and are just pets, and moved them in with the Gang of 3 roosters.  Of course, this messes up the pecking order so the day will be spent by all chickens re-establishing rank.
